Day 18: Climb every mountain, fiord every stream

This blog is coming a day late because I literally fell asleep while sorting through photos. This travelling business, I tell you, it's hard work.

Since I'm playing catch up here, forgive me if I give you a bit of a shortened account of the day.

I went on a cruise through Milford Sound. This involved a three-hour bus ride from Te Anau. Exactly five minutes on this bus reminded me exactly why I don't travel with other people.

We drove through Fiordland National Park, which was lovely - lots of native trees, towering mountains, and spidery waterfalls. We also stopped at the mirror lakes which was a nice little stop and showed off the wonderful effect I had hoped for at Lake Matheson.

Arriving at Milford Sound, we hopped on a boat that sailed out from the wharf right out to the Tasman Sea. It was a really beautiful location and immediately clear why it is one of the top destinations. There were thundering waterfalls, little teeny waterfalls, rainforest-covered mountains and cliffs. Everything looked truly otherworldly.

The two biggest highlights of the cruise were: seeing fur seals (!!)...

...and getting up extremely close to a waterfall.

It was quite the whirlwind of sights, and getting back on that bus to come back to Te Anau was rather a challenge.

Animal Sightings:
